About Me

My Story

I am Alex Liao, a Brisbane-based double bassist and Year 12 student at Brisbane State High School. Music plays a central role in my life, shaping how I listen, collaborate, and understand my place within an ensemble. Through years of dedicated practice and performance, I have developed a strong appreciation for the double bass as both a foundational and expressive voice in music.

Balancing academic study with a demanding schedule of rehearsals and performances, I am deeply committed to continual improvement—refining technique, expanding musical understanding, and engaging in a wide range of ensemble settings. These experiences have shaped me as a disciplined, thoughtful musician with a strong passion for orchestral and chamber performance.

Teaching

I have nearly a decade of experience playing the double bass and a strong passion for teaching. Most recently, I have tutored with Queensland Youth Orchestra, working with young musicians to develop their technique, musicality, and confidence. My teaching is shaped by both my performance experience and my desire to help students achieve their individual goals—whether preparing for AMEB exams, auditions, or playing for personal enjoyment.

I currently offer private double bass lessons from my home studio and aspire to pursue a professional career as a double bassist, continually refining my craft and performing at the highest level.

Professional Experience

I currently study under the tutelage of Phoebe Russell, Principal Double Bass of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and have previously studied with Connie Garrett-Benson.

In 2025, I served as Associate Principal Double Bass of the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, performing under Professor Paul Dean, and is a committed member of both Queensland Youth Symphony (QYS), and the Logan City Symphony Orchestra (LCSO). Previously, I was apart of the Creative Generation Symphony Orchestra (2021-2024), most recently serving as Principal Bass in 2024. I have also been a regular participant in the prestigious Musically Outstanding Students (MOST) program since 2021, most recently as Principal Bass.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to perform with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in the annual Spirit of Christmas concert. I have performed in a wide range of orchestral settings, including the Brisbane State High School Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Big Band, and the Kurilpa String Orchestra, where I currently serve as Principal Bass. My ensembles have earned recognition as finalists in the 2024 Instrumental Fanfare and have collaborated with groups such as Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra. In addition to my orchestral work, I have participated in numerous chamber music opportunities, most recently performing the Beethoven Septet.
